3.28.08 WAKE & WAKE
Team rider Annie Sullivan was in town this week so we decided to mix it up and do a little riding out on the water. I called up John, who runs the wakeboard program at Mission Bay Aquatic Center in Mission Beach, SD. Being the rad guy that John is, he hooked us up with a wake session early Thursday morning. Annie rolled up with her buds pro street skater Amy Caron, world champion longboard surfer Jen Smith and all around bad ass Olivia Rohde. Every year, the aquatic center gets hooked up with brand new Liquid Force gear for their classes/rentals so we grabbed every type of board their was - wakeboards, wakeskates, and even threw in Olivia’s 5′9″ surfboard to cruise on as well. By the time we got out on the bay, the sun was actually out and the water conditions were near perfect. Although Amy and Jen had only been once before and it was Olivia’s first time, it wasn’t surprising when they all pretty much killed it with their steezy board skills. Despite Jen not diggin having her feet in bindings or having to wear a life vest and Amy claiming that the water is harsher than concrete (your crazy woman!), the stoke was at an all time high. Annie hadn’t ridden in over 2 years but of course that didn’t stop her from clearing the wake first try and throwing a little grab in while she was at it. Seeing these girls who are the top athletes at their sport get so stoked on something new and different was awesome. We pretty much rode until our arms and legs were ready to fall off and decided it was burrito o’clock. If you are ever in Mission Beach, be sure to hit up La Playa Taco Shop on Mission Blvd — trust me, your tastebuds will thank you.
