7.30.07 ACAMONCHI ART SHOW

Osiris artist “Acamonchi” has a solo show, Conexiones Extranas Guey, opening this from Friday Aug. 3rd, from 8 to 11 p.m., at Voz Alta, 1544 Broadway, in downtown San Diego. Acamonchi’s artwork will be featured on shoes in the Osiris Girls Artist Series line coming out in Fall 2008.
Acamonchi has been active in the underground Tijuana/Ensenada art scene since the 1980s. Last year’s Strange New World: Art and Design from Tijuana exhibition a show at the San Diego Museum of Contemporary Art has recently pushed Acamonchi closer to the mainstream art world, but the artist isn’t letting the attention change him. Behind the playful Acamonchi moniker is a very grounded and clever 36-year-old artist named Gerardo Yepiz. Yepiz is just a regular guy living a modest, vegan and gluten-free lifestyle in North Park. He just happens to be obsessed with art and creation. Yepiz paints, stencils, stamps, spray paints, screenprints and hand-draws his work onto large and small wood panels. He works an average of 10 hours a day in his tiny North Park studio, filling each piece with layers and layers of symbols and texture. Each figure, stamp, line and image reflects the bicultural world in which he lives. Looking at an Acamonchi piece is like traveling through time, space and countries. Your eye bounces from an obscure reference to Aphex Twin to Tijuana’s zebra-painted donkey to Stormtroopers and back to an image of an old Mac or a drawing of his favorite image, the tree stump, which he says represents broken dreams. Everything, every little detail that Acamonchi puts into each piece has meaning. “There’s always something hidden,” he explains, “untold stories in my work: little things here and there that you’ll eventually see or understand as time goes by.”

7.20.07 DIRT TOUR 07

Osiris Girls Team Rider Morgan Mcdole went on a cross country road trip skate tour with her friend’s Kerry and Lorraine. Check out her re-cap and pictures:

THE CREW

Kerry: Kerry is in the passenger seat, and is horrible at taking directions. She always has a smile on her face, and is able to make long hours with the driver without falling asleep. Her nickname is the ‘Sewing Machine’ because she made our DIRT ‘07 shirts, among other things. She also has to make a lot of pit stops. She did pee her pants one time, as I slipped down a hill, running into her.
Lorraine: Lorraine’s nickname is ‘Eating Machine’, as she is in the backseat stuck with the cooler of food. It gets boring back there with the windows down and the radio blaring. She compared herself to a cat, as she has only been sleeping and eating. Lorraine tells funny stories. She is also a germ freak, so she always has a bottle of Germ X with her. Oh yeah, she is also the drama of the group.
Morgan: This is me. I am the DD, so I stick to the soda pop and water until we arrive at our destination. My nickname is ‘Dancing Machine,’ after a night in Frisco.

HIGHLIGHTS

We met a nice guy named Sam, who built cool cars, and let us stay with him in Santa Cruz; surfed County Line, made a duet recording with Tom Petty, and road the Giant Dipper in Santa Cruz (but not in that order). We witnessed summer solstice in San Francisco, escaped Tahoe 6 hrs before the fires hit, and made 23 cents in a casino. We also bobsledded in Park City, Utah, and got a free meal at Texas Roadhouse in New Orleans.

7.3.07 SURFRIDER CHARITY EVENT

Surfrider Foundation
Back in May, a group of Cal State Long Beach students hosted a charity cruise to benefit the Surfrider Foundation. The Surfrider Foundation is a non-profit environmental organization dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of the world’s oceans, waves and beaches for all people, through conservation, activism, research and education. The event took place at the Long Beach Harbor and included a raffle, silent auction, dj, dancing, and an informative guest speaker from the Surfrider Foundation. Osiris Girls helped out by donating shoes to raffle away. The night was a huge success, raising about $11,000 for the foundation.
